FASHION SUITE 1000: THE GENEOLOGY OF THE JUMPSUIT

Jumpsuit Designed in 2010

The jumpsuit is a one-piece garment that that is made with long or short leaves with a connected full leg covering.   In modern times the jumpsuit was used as a uniform and was only worn by men but it has since inspired trends of modern dress.  Jumpsuits have not changed much over the years except for being trendy with current fashions.  The one piece garment consists of shorts, a skirt, or pants attached to straps that come over the shoulder and hook or button to a corresponding piece that covers the chest.  Different textiles have been used when designers create jumpsuits.  Some are made with corduroy, denim, silk, or cotton.  Jumpsuits were really popular during the 1980’s and 1990’s in America, but fell out of popularity when fashion trends changed at the turn of the 20th century.  Check out this time line of jumpsuits worn during the 1930's to present.
