Fashion travels around the world from country to country, but what exactly defines a stylish trend? Fashion trends develop on the streets first by random individuals creating personal styles or just those keeping up with what seems to be cool! Once a street trend is created, designers take notice and then it hits the fashion runway. Take a look at some of these street trends that were developed on the streets and afterwards were revamped to high fashion on the runway. Street trends are definitely taking notice and breaking down barriers!
Zoot Suits
Zuit suits were popularized by African American and Latino Americans during the late 1930's and early 1940's. The zoot suit is high waisted, with wide legged pants, pegged trousers, and long coats. Men often wore the suit with a hat to top off the look. Here is an image of a Latino male wearing a zoot suit during the 1940's.
John Galliano redesigned the zoot suit with a checkered snakeskin zoot suit. This design was a part of his Spring 2002 Ready-To-Wear collection.
Teddy Boys
Teddy Boys fashion was created by the young British generation who decided to make their look unique. Here is an image of a group of British young men showing off their Teddy Boy style during the 1950's.
John Galliano does it again with revamping the trend of Teddy Boys. In his Spring 2007 collection, he definitely proves to the fashion world he can turn any old trend into fresh and brand new. Here are two designs of the fashion show which includes the suits with ties.
Beatniks
The beatnik generation emerged as a counterculture to the materialistic, clean-cut and straight morals of the 1950's. Here is beatnik Audrey Hepburn in "Funny Face" in 1957.
Betsey Johnson introduced her Beatnik themed designs for her Fall 2008 collection. She embraced the beatnik trend with beret hats and black sunglasses that brought out the theme. She included leopard prints, black, and leather to complete this collection.
Mods
The mod style look came into gear during the 1960's and exemplified high fashion with decreasing the hemlines of miniskirts, leggings, bright colorful patterns, big lashes, and high boots. Here is a picture of the first supermodel, Twiggy modeling in Mod fashion in 1960.
In 2008, Lacoste introduced several Mod inspired designs within its Spring collection. These designs included artistic retro designs and eye catching black and white patterns that are sure to scream "Mod style has returned."
Hippies
The hippies fashion was embraced by the young and some older adults during the 1960's. The clothing expressed individualism and empowerement as well as the promotion of peace and love.
Here are two designs by Tsumori Chisato's Fall 2010 Ready to Wear collection. Chisato used her inspiration for this line with looks of hippies to gypsies in long, soft flowing gowns with retro printing.
Disco
Disco fashion was a huge hit during the 1970's as dancing and club wear was popular. This image is from the movie "Saturday Night Fever" starring John Travolta filmed in 1977.
Versace implemented a little bit of disco flair in the Fall 2009 Ready-To-Wear collection. This collection included sexy glamour long gowns, with shimmering fabrics, and super feminine silhouettes.
Punk
Punk fashion was developed during the late 1970's with bold bright colors, wild hairstyles, comestics, and body modifications were implemented into a fashion trend. This photograph was taken at De Montfort Hall during a performance by "The Damned," in 1977 during Leicester's first major punk concert.
Marc Jacobs decided to revamp the Punk trend into his Fall 2009 collection with neon bright pinks and purples, and overly exaggerated hairstyles. The line included slashed dresses and tight pencil skirts with sexy booties.
Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop fashion has been a rapid growing trend in the fashion industry and has made a profound mark over the years. Hip-Hop fashion originated from African American youth that includes sagging jeans, large gold chains, and bright colors. Here is an image of the Hip-Hop popular female rap group "Salt N Pepa" in their fashionable hip-hop trending clothes.
One designer that dabbled a little in the hip-hop trend is Christian Dior for the Fall 2003 couture line. These two designs give off the hip-hop feel with bright and bold color patterns.
Newest Street Trends
Everyday new street trends are in the process of becoming a budding one or something that won't last but a few days. There are two new street fashion trends that are popular for the Fall fashion of this year.
Animal prints seem to fall in and out of style but no matter what it has the strength to hold on to its trendy place. Another new trendy style is women and men rocking blazers with pants or jeans. These blazers are being worn in bright colors and patterns which gives any outfit a fashionable chic look.
